A Solo Exhibition by Antonius Kho "Faces Of The Soul " at Biji ArtSpace Ubud
Ubud, Bali.1.7.2026.Bali in beauty of Art ,Wajah-wajah Jiwa (Face of the Soul) presents a series of works across multiple periods that capture the artists' inner journeys, experiences, and perspectives on life. In this exhibition, the "face" is not simply understood as a physical representation of a human being, but rather as a metaphor for the various states of the soul that continually change over time. Each work traces the intersection of personal experiences, memories, reflections, and social realities that shape the identity of its creator.Through works created during different periods, this exhibition demonstrates how visual language is constantly evolving. Changes in medium, technique, color, and aesthetic approach mark the dynamics of the artists' creative journeys. Yet, behind these transformations, a common thread connects them all: the effort to understand humans as complex beings, full of layers of emotion, hope, anxiety, and the search for meaning. Each work can be seen as a portrait of the soul. Some depict serenity and contemplation, while others capture inner struggles, longing, joy, and anxiety born of life experiences. The faces featured in this exhibition are not always literal; sometimes they appear in the form of figures, gestures, symbols, imaginative landscapes, or even abstractions that convey specific emotional states. This exhibition also invites visitors to see that the human soul is never singular. It is composed of various overlapping experiences, forming a constantly evolving identity. The works from across time periods, brought together in one space, present a dialogue between past and present, between memory and reality, between what is visible and what is hidden within.
Ultimately, Wajah-Wajah Jiwa (Face of the Soul) is not just an exhibition of artworks, but a space for reflection on humanity itself. In front of each work, visitors are invited to recognize the faces of the soul that may be present within the artists, while also discovering reflections of their own.
Artist statement : Antonius Kho"My works are mosaics of art and culture from my country, which is a variety of arts, cultures and languages, is a synthesis between east and west. My art education background in Germany, at FH-Cologne Art Academy, majoring in glass paintings and textile art-tapestry, therefore my works is a synthesis of mosaic and textile art. A particular theme in his work is people, from the past until now, with various techniques in his works. I using mixed medium, acrylic colors, collages such as jute, rope, thread, textile, paste and transparent paper. It looks 3-dimensional, because I likes cubism, apart from painting I also likes to make sculptures. The subjects of my works are mostly about the mosaic of my life, the people around my life, I works with various phases, like circulation of my life.My works are born from a slow process. I am drawn to the moment when people stop moving and time seems to hold its breath. I leave the meaning open, so that everyone can find their own space and be free to interpret it for themselves."
"My creative practice stems from an understanding of the body as a symbolic construct that is constantly in the process of becoming. The body is not positioned as a complete anatomical representation, but rather as a space for the articulation of fragmented experiences, memories, and affections. The imaginative figures I present are formed through an intuitive approach that emphasizes iterative processes, layering, and the use of textile materials as visual structural elements."" I understand the process of creating the works as a ritual practice. The act of attaching, overlapping, repeating lines, and leaving traces of work legible are essential parts of constructing meaning. This ritual is not sacred in the formal sense, but rather presents as a reflective practice that allows for a negotiation between control and spontaneity, between form and inner experience."Color functions as an effective language that goes beyond decorative roles; it works as a medium for emotional expression as well as a visual structure that activates the relationship between figure, space, and audience.
Faces Of Soul
The presence of the recurring heart symbol emphasizes the body as a center of affectivity, vulnerability, and vitality, as well as an open field of interpretation. Through these works, "I seek to present the figure as a symbolic entity—nearly a totemic form—that functions as an intermediary between personal experience and the broader social space. Thus this practice becomes an ongoing effort to reassemble the body, memory and imagination through a ritualistic and experimental visual language."The artworks on display span several years, from 2003 to 2026, but only a few. This retrospective 23-year journey, with a total of 35 artworks on display this time.**Let see and visite the Art on 5 July 2026.bali-inspirasi #storytelling*
