A DIALOGUE BETWEEN THE MOON AND ITS HALO

A luminous circle of moonlight radiates in the boundless sky, A faint, clear glow unfolding in delicate, layered rings.

The moon asks its halo, "Why do you remain so faithfully by my side?"

The halo answers, "Simply to protect the beauty of your subtle, veiled presence."

This fragment of an ancient poem by the Chinese poet Gu Feng serves as a guiding principle and the title for this curatorial project. We may view Handy Saputra's works as a profound reflection on the depths of the inner self while engaging with the world around us. Through our imagination, we contemplate internal, meditative phenomena and observe the unfolding events in our immediate surroundings, social lives, and regions that transcend national borders.

The poem illustrates a relationship of mutual complement: the moon questions why a halo always encircles it during the cold of night. The halo responds poetically, revealing that its presence is not meant to rival the moon's brilliance but to frame and preserve its beauty, making it all the more graceful and magical to the world. In this light, we can envision Handy's works as a moon, always accompanied by a surrounding halo -a circle that captures and conveys the myriad events beneath it, including those concerning humanity and our behavior. Through Handy's works, we reflect on who we are and what it means to be human by engaging with the visuals he creates. To answer these questions, we need only to use our imagination in interpreting his work.

Embarking on a journey through the works of Handy Saputra invites you to set sail on a vessel of imagination-drifting through the skies to admire the moon's simple beauty while interacting with genderless figures, anonymous beings, curious objects, magical masks, and other captivating elements that fill his contemporary creations.

Handy Saputra, a contemporary artist and entrepreneur from Bali, stands out with his unique style in the realms of Art Brut ("raw art") and Outsider Art (art created outside the mainstream). He transcends the confines of traditional studio practices by merging his business management background with an expressive, self-taught approach to visual art.

His creations exude a wild, instinctive, and uninhibited energy, reflecting raw honesty free from pretension and the limitations of academic technique. Handy embraces dynamic media, primarily working with bold Chinese ink on paper, acrylic paint on canvas, and printmaking encompassing screen printing and lithography as well as wood carving. These mediums, especially his printmaking techniques, shine throughout his artistic journey, including his recent exhibitions, such as The Dragonfly's Ripples, featuring fresh and deeply emotive pieces.

In Indonesia, Art Brut is not a new phenomenon. Several artists, like Ni Nyoman Tanjung from Bali, discovered by Made Budhiana and introduced to the international stage by Georges Breguet, exemplify this movement. Another significant figure is Dwi Putro Mulyono, known as "Pak Wi," from Yogyakarta,

a monumental presence in outsider art. Living with schizophrenia and severe hearing impairment, Pak Wi uses painting as a powerful means of communication and a focal point for his cognitive processes.

As an Art Brut artist, Handy Saputra passionately engages in a variety of mediums, including acrylic on canvas, lithography, and innovative screen printing. He regularly explores advanced techniques at the professional DEVFTO Printmaking Studio.

Handy's works resonate with socio-political irony, social abstraction, and poignant observations of daily life, as exemplified in Looking for Scapegoat. By embracing the artistic path of Art Brut, Handy stands out as a prolific creator. His work bursts with emotion and meaning, illuminated by the dynamic interplay of imagination and visual form, capturing a range of positive reactions.

His exhibitions, The Audacity of Silent Brush and The Dragonfly's Ripples, reveal significant qualitative growth in his practice. In The Audacity of Silent Brush, Handy uncovered a creative oasis filled with deeply personal visual interpretations. The Dragonfly's Ripples then extended these discoveries, evolving into a solid foundation that resonated with a wider audience, inspiring diverse perspectives and impactful engagement across various media.

In the exhibition titled The Dialogue Between the Moon and Its Halo, we are invited to witness extraordinary visual phenomena. Handy's creative journey reflects a remarkable transformation-from an inward exploration to an artistic identity that engages with the unfolding world around him. He inspires us to look outward and reflect on the philosophical, political, and psychological intricacies of life. Works like Match Making in China invite us to contemplate the irony and melancholy of matchmaking, deeply rooted in the cultural experience of that country. The piece Two Men and A Dog reveals the psychological nuances of solitary existence. Additionally, Handy's porcelain sculptures, The Weight of the Bird and The Vigil of Crimson Spirit, encourage contemplative exploration of the mind and consciousness, symbolized by a bird an emblem of freedom and the soul's awareness.#story bali-inspirasi
