Marginalizing Modern Architectural Heritage: The Case of Java
Abstract:
Marginalizing means treating someone or something as if it is not important. Marginalization often occurs in the social and political realms. However, this also happens in the realm of architecture, especially heritage architecture. Speaking of historical time periods, people are more familiar with the architecture of the classical historical period than the twentieth-century period associated with the Modern Movement. This inequality is an unfair situation in society when "modern architectural heritage" is given an "unequal category" where architectural typology and historical background receive less attention and opportunities to be preserved both in terms of form and value. The categorical imbalance towards Modern Architectural Heritage forced UNESCO to declare modern heritage in crisis in 2001. The destruction and neglect of modern heritage occurred in Western countries. In Asia, including Indonesia and, most specifically, Java, modern heritage was experienced not as part of the modernization of civilization but as evidence of discrimination during the colonial period. Modern cultural heritage in post-colonial Indonesia is very dependent on who has "control" over modern artifacts and the knowledge of modern civilization behind the heritage. Various cases of neglect or efforts to preserve modern cultural heritage can be lessons on how modern artifacts in Indonesia are currently treated. These modern artifacts are related to industrial modernization (sugar factories, salt industry, etc.), modernization of railway transportation, modernization of urban energy (electricity), and efforts to meet the needs of the modern lifestyle of the Dutch ruling family through modern housing and urban complex facilities that apply the Garden City concept.
