Exploring VOC Fort Typologies in Indonesia: Local Adaptations and Their Relationship to European Theoretical Models for Transcultural Heritage Interpretation

ABSTRACT:
The colonial era in Indonesia witnessed the construction of numerous European forts, which played critical roles in controlling trade, securing territories, and protecting strategic routes. This study provides a comprehensive overview of selected 17th-century colonial forts in Indonesia, emphasizing their typologies, morphology, construction materials, and the interplay between European theoretical models and local inputs. The research is based on visits to 10 notable forts, offering unique insights into their architectural characteristics, strategic locations, and cultural significance within the landscape.
Through the lens of these forts, the study examines the transcultural interpretation of shared heritage, highlighting the interaction between European architectural models and the unique Indonesian landscape. The findings contribute to the broader discourse on the preservation and adaptive reuse of colonial heritage in Southeast Asia.
