International Zoom Seminar Urbanism, Architecture & Art History (GUU onderzoeker INA- NL) 14 th Episode Urban Politics and the Royal Courts of SurakartaABSTRACT:This presentation explores the power dynamics between Surakarta’s two royal courts and their influence on urban space. The Sunanate of Surakarta, the older and more centrally located court, historically held greater prominence. However, despite having a similar land area, the minor court of Mangkunegaran has gained more socio-political influence through cultural festivals and alliances with the current political regime.
This influence extends into the urban landscape, where recent developments increasingly highlight Mangkunegaran’s significance while overshadowing the Sunanate.
